The Art of Frances Lai Wang

Frances Lai Wang is a contemporary artist, whose style is heavily influenced by Modernism and the Cubist style. The following text is quoted from her about her work.

(Wang, Frances Lai. Studio Table 3.
c. 2006. oil on canvas.)

"Trained as a chemist, however, I found my passion in art. I took early retirement from teaching chemistry and went back to school. I received my B. A. in fine art at California State University at Long Beach in 1989."

(Wang, Frances Lai. Zen Garden 5.
c. 2007. oil on canvas.)

“My work is profoundly influenced by Modernism, as I do not merely paint the surface of the objects, rather search for the innerness and the essence of the matters. Fragmentation of the objects into their essential volumes, planes, and patterns creating dynamism and rhythm in space is the ultimate challenge for me. Molding beauty out of geometric and curvilinear forms is also my ultimate goal for my art. I believe what Mondrian said, ‘the surface of things gives enjoyment, the interiority gives life.”

(Wang, Frances Lai. Human Bondage I.
c. 2006. oil on canvas.)

“I am also drawn to paint in broad brush, intense color, and lyric lines—a passionate disciple of the Abstract Expressionism- to invite the viewers into my own emotional world—passion vs. reasoning; possibility vs. limitation; optimism vs. despair.”

(Wang, Frances Lai. Human Bondage 2.
c. 2007. oil on canvas.)

“Growing up in the Chinese culture, my work is also influenced by the affinity I feel for the Eastern spirituality—the Noguchi’s Zen-like quality --seeking an order from chaos, clarity from complexity; depicting “chi” –the flow of life energy that articulates the tension, balance, and grace in nature. Let the spirits of forms flow, the ‘chi’ will emerge and be embodied in the work.”

(Wang, Frances Lai. Still Life Table 2.
c. 2007. oil on canvas.)

The Art of Miguel Avataneo

Argentine artist, Miguel Avataneo, was born in 1962 in San Cristóbal, Argentina. In 1988 he graduated from La Escuela de Artes de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba.

(Avataneo, Miguel. Muchacha Con Flores "Girl with Flowers")

Avataneo is one of the brightest talents in Argentina’s art world. He is a painter of images that combine a love of classicism with the South American tradition of magical realism.

(Avataneo, Miguel. Aqua Clara "Clear Water" )

His images are rooted in the real world of European classicism but are infused with a naturally fantastical element. Exquisitely drawn figures are placed in dreamlike environments.

(Avataneo, Miguel. Calas "Coves" )

Avataneo’s imagery is sensual and evocative and employs a luxurious use of color and detail that give his canvases a luminous quality that is mesmerizing.

(Avataneo, Miguel. Tras Un Retazo Del Olvido "Forgotten Moment" )

Avataneo’s art has been admired and sought after by collectors throughout Latin America, the United States, and Europe, and his work is much appreciated here!

The Art of Ikrano Theodorus

Ikrano Theodorus is a contemporary abstract painter, he uses bold color and interesting imperfect geometric shapes to express himself. He describes the purpose of his art in the following statement. "I am a self-taught artist with a wholehearted commitment and dedication to master the art of painting, which I realize will be a lifelong learning and striving in effort to achieve even the smallest measure of perfection."

(Theodorus, Ikrano. The Difference A Woman Make.
c. 2008. Oil on canvas.)

"Art, as for me, is a skill to communicate the sense of beauty that comes to my experience of this world. The sense of beauty, as I believe, is one of the primal aspirations of all human beings, and what do I intend with the work of art, is to preserve my aspiration as well as my experience of beauty."

(Theodorus, Ikrano. Geometry. c. 2008.
Oil on canvas.)

"So, the main concern in my works is to create a harmony of shapes and colors; inspired by my unconscious interaction with nature or surroundings that somehow, by inexplicably way, make up the sense of beauty. It applies not in my abstract or decorative paintings only, but in my realist paintings as well."

(Theodorus, Ikrano. Built-up to Sky. c. 2007.
Oil on canvas.)

"I hope my pieces of art will serve to any viewer, more or less in the way they were intended to."

(Theodorus, Ikrano. The Masculine. c. 2008.
Oil on canvas.)

You can purchase one of Theodorus' original paintings at gallerytoday.com for a very reasonable price. I love his work, it's bold and beautiful and he is much appreciated here!

The Art of Mari Giddings

Mari Elsa Giddings is a contemporary artist who was born in Washington, D.C. in 1959. She grew up in Maryland, New York, and then studied art at Phoenix College in Arizona with Meryl Mahaffey and Allen Dutton. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Arizona State University in 1984, where she worked under master printers, such as Dan Britten and Wayne Kimball.

(Giddings, Mari. Satori I.)

In 1986 she became chief assistant to master printer Robert A. Devoe at the Phoenix Art Press. Shortly after, Mari opened her own studio in the Verde Valley in northern Arizona where she happily painted landscapes for several years. In 1991 Mari moved back to Phoenix to become the Art Director of Phoenix Art Press.

(Giddings, Mari. Satori II.)

Giddings states, "My art helps me to see beyond culturally learned forms, breaking down perceptions that are so deeply ingrained, so taken for granted that they seem real, the only possible way to see. For me, successful art destroys the obvious connections by which we construct our realities and makes new connections, then it destroys those connections, too, realizing infinite alternatives. Art is never a finished product, but a moving, living, immediate process which begins again with every painting ... and with every viewing."

(Giddings, Mari. Arrangement II. )

In 1995 Mari co-founded the Planet Art Group in Phoenix, Arizona. Mari works in a variety of styles, from naturalistic landscapes to cubist abstraction, yet she sees no contradiction in these approaches.

Giddings says, "Neither strict representation nor abstraction is simply imitations of reality, but tools for the construction and reflection of an artist’s individual experience. As infants, we learn to objectify our individual perceptions through relating with others. In the same way, art allows us to conceptualize subjective experience by turning it into an object that can be shared. In this sense, all art, abstract and representational, is simultaneously self-portraiture and a mob scene, intimate and public."

(Giddings, Mari. Well Being I.)

Her artwork is extremely elegant and reflects the color tones of the Sonoran desert. Mari Giddings is a wonderful contemporary artist and her work is much appreciated here!

He is passionate about painting from life and this spiritual connection resonates in his work. Brent’s daring use of color and brushstrokes, along with his unique compositional style is characteristic of his paintings. His works range from intimate portraits to large-scale mural installations, which are currently on display in galleries, institutions, and private collections worldwide.

Brent spent his early career producing a large body of work from illustrated books to record covers. The power and energy of his figurative work are due to Brent’s need to draw and compose from life, whether in a studio working with models or in the field of air painting. This spiritual connection with his subject is the cornerstone of his artwork.

(Lynch, Brent J. Coastal Drive. Oil on canvas)

“I have always been aware of the spiritual dimension which connects us to everyone and everything. For me, investigating a landscape, portrait, or life study transforms my perspective. The process of drawing or painting the subject becomes a wonderful way to acknowledge this relationship,” says Brent.
